Overall Run Shenandoah National Park

Sunday was a hike up to Overall Run Falls in Shenandoah National Park to check out the ice and ice climbers. The shot above was some ice that had formed before the main waterfall. The three shots below were taken by Anita Tang and show Overall Run Falls with an ice climber on it.

Repeated quote of the day.
Where did I put that? Zip....Nope, Zip....Nope, Zip....Nope, Lordy, lordy too many pockets, too many pockets!

Saturday & Sunday
January 15 & 16, 2011
The Snow Is Gone Again.
Partly Cloudy, Cold 25-30 degrees F.

On Saturday Anita and I went up to the second White Oak Canyon waterfall and watched some ice climbers on the canyon walls for awhile then went up Berryhollow fire road and explored a number of old cabin sites in Weakley Hollow.

Here is the classic shot from near the winery on your approach to Old Rag parking. The big change this week was that the snow was all gone.
Here is the shot looking up the Ridge Trail which was devoid of any ice or snow. You could still find some old ice and snow tucked away deep in shady crevases but the trail was clear. There were probably about 50-70 hikers on Old Rag.
We hung out on the summit for about forty minutes. The winds were unusually calm which made it easier to keep from getting chilled while we watched the sunset.

The following sunset photo is stitched from three photos. You can already notice that the spot the sun goes below the horizon is moving northwestward each day. If you check the July 11, 2010 blog post you can see where the sun went below the horizon to the right side of Hawksbill.
There was a three quarter waxing full moon this weekend and we were able to walk out with our headlamps off. Full moon Wednesday January 19, 2011

Snow's Back Saturday January 8, 2011

Parking lot was fairly busy for a winter day.
PATC Trail maintenance had been out early and treated the trails with sand. (kidding but it did look that way)

Looking up the Scramble from first false summit.

Oopsy daisy I caught Anita in a picture.

The view from Skyline AKA PATC Wall.

You could see sheets of snow falling from the summit.

December 31, 2010 Millenium Seemed Like Yesterday

Friday December 31, 2010
Snow Gone
Good Sunset

The last day of the year and the last day of the first decade (oops that was actually last year) of the 21st Century. Hard to believe it has already been 11 years since the millenium.
The snow was gone the temperatures were in the high 40s and the snow was gone. Anita joined me for a complete circuit and brought along an awesome five course meal.

The parking lot was three quarters full.

Nature provided her own fireworks with yet another wonderful Old Rag Sunset. This first shot was taken looking towards Fork Mountain.

This shot was taken looking towards Graves Mountain Lodge.

This last shot is taken looking towards Fork Mountain again but about ten minutes after the sun went behind the horizon. So long 2010 you were a great year. Hoping 2011 is even better.
